What is a root canal?

Non-surgical root canal treatment usually involves the removal of the tooth’s pulp, a small thread-like tissue of blood vessels and nerves that was important for tooth development. Once removed, it is replaced with natural materials that seal off the root canal from its supporting structures. Once completed a restoration, such as a crown, is placed to strengthen the remaining tooth. This is a common dental treatment with well over 14 million performed each year approaching a success rate of 90%. This simple treatment can save your natural teeth and prevent the need for dental implants or bridges.

What should I expect?

Our office has the latest technology and training to be able to provide this treatment in a comfortable manner and relatively short period of time. Initially an examination determines the extent of pulpal injury and helps determine if the tooth is a good candidate for endodontic treatment. If necessary, endodontic treatment is typically done with local anesthesia resulting in very minimal to no discomfort during the procedure. If any discomfort is anticipated after completion, appropriate pain medications can be given. Often this is not necessary. For more complex cases, the referral to and endodontic specialist is made.
